Have you ever walked into the store to buy cat food and seen shelves full of different options for cat food? Well, I know I have! Hopefully, someone can help me figure out what foods are good and what foods are bad!

Currently, I am feeding PHX the Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula. I heard that this isn't a good food to feed cats though, because it's low quality?!?!

Can anyone give me some advice on what cat foods are good and which ones aren't? Thanks! biggrin.gif

I wont use any commercial pet food. I avoid purina, SD, and many others...

I have used Innova EVO, Wellness, Nutro, and now currently California Natural.

I avoid anything with by-product/by-product meal, corn, and wheat glueten.

Reviews:

Innova EVO: Great grain free product yet it goes stale fast when sitting out, it is a raw dry food diet. My kitties where wasting food and not eating the leftovers once they kibbles became stale... However they loved the flavor

Wellness: Another nice line, I had Tiger on the healthy weight (I also no longer use weight management formulas of any kind... it caused him to blow up) and Nollee on the kitten formula. The wet foods are a pleaser with the kitties... Thought the line is expensive

Nutro Natural Choice: Not the greatest, but not the worst. I had both kitties on this as well till I found other products... This is much better than purina and affordable. Available at most corporate pet stores... ie Petsmart, Petco, and Petworld

California Natural: So far so good... Just started all three kitties on this, for the sake of Osiris and his poor digestive system

As for wet the kitties have liked Felidae Chicken and Rice wet... I havent tried many others... They were not a fan of Innova wet!

I'm thinking about switching to Chicken Soup...

Its not the best out there but it is FAR better than purina and still affordable...

Here are the ingredients for the adult formula:

Chicken, chicken meal, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), ocean fish meal, white rice, potatoes, oatmeal, millet, natural chicken flavor, salmon, turkey, duck, flaxseed, sodium bisulfate, egg product, methionine, potassium chloride, choline chloride, dried chicory root, taurine, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, niacin, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin A supplement, biotin, potassium iodide, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

I say it is worth shot. Alot of people are fans of CS. make sure you gradually mix the cs in with purina... Im sure you know that already. Dont do a cold turkey switch... It can cause stomach upset.

We only feed our cats Innova EVO and the occasional raw treat.

EVO is far Superior to any food I have ever used!

I actually sent my mother a bag to use on her cat that had been recently diagnosed with Diabetes, his counts were very high. Vet had her On some Purina prescribed food and pills that did nothing but make his sugar go up. She fed him the EVO and within 1 week his sugar was down.

Oh I just want to add my opinion on buying food. I would never buy a food brand that was on the recall list. Even if that flavor or variety was not on that list.

I was a huge EVO fan too but my kitties starting wasting it. Anything that sat untouched in the dish for more then 4 hours they would turn their noses up at... Because it goes stale so fast. EVO is the one I recommend the most for dry diet, but I had to explore other options in the meantime.

I definetly don't want to get that kind then, because I free feed PHX. His food sits out until the dish is empty, and I fill it back up. LOL emo-cat_smiley.gif

EVO is expensive too. It cost me about 25 bucks for a 6 pound bag! It's worth it though...

Is it just me, or does it seem like it's harder to find good cat food than it is to find good dog food?

I had my cats on Felidae (which they didn't really like) and the stores around here stopped carrying it. I switched to Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. The only other good brands I can find are Wellness and Solid Gold.

No it's not just you. Remember when I fed Flint River Ranch? Good dog food right.. Well take a look at their cat food. When I adopted Puff I thought about putting him on it. I almost assumed it would be good and bought it. I'm glad I took a look at it first because as far as I'm concerned it's almost like Ol Roy food! yeah that bad.

We buy the Special Kitty from the Wal Mart. I never seen some of those brands here we are not so high class in Tupelo. Werent matter if we did, we cant afford that kind of money. The Lord takes care of them thought. We have plenty of field mice and sometimes a rabbit they can catch. and I give them some scraps from dinner some days. They don't come runnin when the door opens so they are not too bad hungry.

As long as you provide the best you can. Though you would be amazed how cheap it is with the other brands (If their available to you)
